Marion County is located in the great state of Georgia, United States. Established on December 14, 1827, the county was carved out of Lee County and named in honor of Brigadier General Francis Marion, an American Revolutionary War hero who earned the title "Swamp Fox" for his elusive tactics against British forces.

Covering an area of about 367 square miles, Marion County sits within Georgia's Lower Coastal Plain and is part of the Black Belt, a region famous for its rich, dark, and fertile soil. Buena Vista serves as the county seat, while other towns in the region include Tazewell and Mauk. For years during the 19th and early 20th century, agriculture was the primary economic driver, with cotton and peanut farming at the forefront.

Marion County is renowned for its rich history and is home to the historic Pasaquan, a 7-acre art environment created by Southern self-taught artist Eddie Owens Martin, known as St. EOM, between 1957 and 1986. Pasaquan was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This vibrant and colorful art space includes six major structures, mandala-style painted walls, and over 900 feet of elaborately designed concrete masonry fencing, making it an excellent place to visit and explore for visitors and locals alike.
