Montgomery County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 19, 1793. The county was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War general who lost his life in the Battle of Quebec. The county seat, Mount Vernon, was established later on in 1813. Montgomery County is part of the Vidalia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is known for its fertile soil and agricultural potential.

Historically, Montgomery County was home to Native American tribes like the Muskogee and Yamasee. European settlers began to establish themselves in the region in the 18th century, with its prime location along the Altamaha River making it suitable for trade and settlement.

Montgomery County played a role during the American Civil War as well. Many of the men from the region enlisted in the Confederate army, with some taking part in major battles such as Gettysburg.

A fun fact about Montgomery County is that it is known for its sweet onions, specifically the Vidalia onion, which was first cultivated in the area during the 1930s. The unique combination of climate, soil, and growing techniques in this region produces onions with a distinct sweetness, leading to the Vidalia onion's popularity nationwide. In recognition of the onion's significance, the Vidalia Onion Festival is held annually in Montgomery County and neighboring Toombs County, drawing thousands of visitors to celebrate this famous crop.
