Oconee County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on February 25, 1875, after being carved out from the larger Clarke County. It gets its name from the Oconee River which runs through the area. The word "Oconee" comes from a Muskogee term meaning "born from water."

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Creek and Cherokee, the land was ceded to Georgia after treaties were signed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. European settlers, mainly from the British Isles, began populating the area, focusing on agriculture and later industrial pursuits.

During the Civil War, the region witnessed relatively minimal impact as there were no significant battles in the area. The arrival of the Georgia Railroad in the 1840s connected Oconee County to the broader region, promoting trade and population growth. The agricultural sector continued to be a driving force in the county's economy, primarily focusing on cotton production until the turn of the 20th century.

Historically, Oconee County is home to numerous significant landmarks. One notable site is the William Daniell House, constructed in the early 19th century and still stands as a representation of early plantation architecture.

Fun Fact: Oconee County has a tradition of having painted farm silos, which depict scenes inspired by local history or nature. The Silo Art Project was created to preserve and promote these artworks while fostering a sense of community pride and identity. Today, this project has transformed the county's landscape, turning it into an artistic, historic, and scenic treasure.
