The county was created from parts of Houston (pronounced house-ton) and Macon counties, making it the last of 161 Georgia counties to be formed. Named after the state's signature produce, the peach, the county is located in the central region of Georgia, known for its rich soil and agricultural abundance.

Fort Valley, the county seat, was incorporated in 1856 and is home to one of the oldest chartered universities in Georgia, Fort Valley State University, which was founded in 1895. Another city in Peach County is Byron, a small but thriving area that has seen a significant growth in recent years.

One fun fact about Peach County is that it hosts the annual Georgia Peach Festival held in June.
