It covers an area of approximately 232 square miles and originally consisted of parts of Gilmer and Cherokee Counties.

Jasper serves as the county seat and has been the political and cultural center of Pickens County since its inception. The region saw early economic development tied primarily to agricultural activities, such as cotton and livestock production. However, as time went on, the focus shifted towards industries centering around mining and marble production, which eventually earned Pickens County the title of "The Marble Capital of Georgia."

Pickens County contains a portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest, which offers numerous recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing. The county also has the Sharp Mountain Vineyards, the only vineyard and winery in the area, offering exquisite mountain views and local wine tasting experiences.

A fun fact about Pickens County is that it is home to the Tate House, a historic mansion built in 1923 from pink Etowah marble found in the county.
