Polk County, situated in the northwestern part of the great state of Georgia, was established on December 20, 1851. Named after the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk, the county was formed from portions of Paulding and Floyd counties. In its early years, agriculture played a significant role in the local economy, with crops like corn, wheat, and cotton being the most prevalent.

The county seat, Cedartown, was incorporated in 1854, and it derived its name from the abundance of red cedar trees in the area. Another significant city in the county is Rockmart, which was incorporated in 1872 and owes its name to a local businessman who owned a rock market in the city. The presence of a railroad in the late 1800s fueled the growth of industry and commerce in Polk County, particularly in Rockmart.

One fun fact about Polk County is its rich natural beauty, which includes the Silver Comet Trail. This popular multi-use paved trail was created on an abandoned railroad line and spans over 61 miles, stretching from Smyrna, Georgia, to the Alabama state line.
