Richmond County is located in the great state of Georgia, USA. Its roots can be traced back to colonial times, when it was established on February 5, 1777, as one of the original eight counties in the state. The county was named in honor of the Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox, who was a strong supporter of American independence from Britain.

Augusta, the city that serves as the county seat of Richmond County, was established in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony. It quickly grew in importance due to its strategic location near the Savannah River, which served as a vital trade and transportation route. Throughout the years, Augusta has played a significant role in Georgia's economy and history. It has been a center for trade, agriculture, and industry, as well as a significant military and medical hub.

During the Civil War, Richmond County saw its fair share of battles and destruction, as Confederate forces tried to defend the city from Union troops. The Confederates' efforts were ultimately in vain, as Union forces successfully captured Augusta and other parts of the county by the end of the war.

In the 20th century, Richmond County experienced industrial and urban growth, particularly during World War II, with the expansion of nearby military facilities such as Fort Gordon. Today, the county remains an important center for healthcare, industry, and military presence.
