Screven County is located in the eastern part of the state of Georgia, USA. Formed on December 14, 1793, from parts of Burke and Effingham counties, the county is named in honor of General James Screven, a Revolutionary War hero who played a significant role in the early history of Georgia.

One of the important historical events that occurred in Screven County was the Siege of Savannah in 1779, during which French and American forces unsuccessfully attempted to recapture the port city of Savannah from the British. Agriculture has played a significant role in the county's economy, with cotton, corn, and lumber being the primary industries during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sylvania, the county seat, was incorporated on December 20, 1847. The city experienced growth with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. The first high school in the county was built in 1900, further contributing to the growth and development of the region.
