Stephens County, located in the northeast corner of the great state of Georgia, was established on August 18, 1905. The county was named after Alexander H. Stephens, a prominent Georgian politician, United States Congressman and Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

Stephens County's largest city and county seat is Toccoa, a name derived from the Cherokee word for "beautiful" or "where the Catawbas lived." The county is known for its natural beauty, as it is situated in the southern part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The region's history dates back to the Native American tribes who inhabited the lands before the arrival of European settlers in the late 16th century. The area was mainly a hunting ground for Cherokee and Creek tribes before the settlers moved in. The region played a significant role during different periods, including the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and is rich with historical sites as a testament to its significant past.

A fun fact about this region is that Stephens County was home to the initiation of the Georgia Baptist Association's first summer camp called Camp Christoloma in the 1940s. This notable camp was aimed at promoting religious education and fellowship among its attendees, fostering a sense of community within the region.

Today, Stephens County offers various recreational activities, thanks to its abundant natural beauty and resources, including Toccoa Falls, a spectacular 186-foot high waterfall, which is one of the highest in the eastern United States.
