Stewart County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Georgia. Established on December 23, 1830, it was named after General Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War hero and early settler in Georgia. The county is part of the Black Belt region of Georgia known for its fertile soil and extensive cotton farming. Lumpkin, the county seat, was named in honor of the state's governor, Wilson Lumpkin.

The county initially thrived through agriculture and trade along the Chattahoochee River. However, by the early 20th century, the region faced economic challenges due to the decline of cotton farming, partly caused by the boll weevil infestation.

Historically, this area of Georgia was inhabited by Creek Indians, and a significant Native American site, the ancient Kolomoki Mounds, can be found in the neighboring Early County. The largest mound in the group, the Temple Mound, was at one point the largest prehistoric structure in Georgia.

A fun fact about Stewart County is the presence of the Providence Canyon, often referred to as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon". This geological marvel, covering over 1,000 acres, is a series of incredible gullies formed by erosion that showcases beautiful layers of colorful soil. Today, it serves as a popular tourist attraction and state park, attracting hikers and nature enthusiasts from all over the country.
