Sumter County is located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Established on December 26, 1831, Sumter County was named in honor of General Thomas Sumter, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The county spans around 493 square miles and its county seat is the city of Americus.

The history of Sumter County largely reflects the broader history of Georgia and the South as a whole. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Creek Indians. After the Indian Removal Act of 1830, these tribes were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands to enable European-American settlement. The initial settlers primarily engaged in cotton farming, which led to the expansion of plantations and dependency on the labor of enslaved Africans.

During the Civil War, Sumter County residents took part in the conflict, with many serving in the Confederate army. The county, however, did not experience direct military actions. Following the war, the county transitioned to a sharecropping and tenant farming system, as freed, enslaved people began to establish lives independent of their former enslavers.

Throughout the 20th century, Sumter County continued to develop, with the expansion of its agricultural industry, improvements in infrastructure, and growth in educational institutions. Notably, the county is home to Georgia Southwestern State University, a public institution that was founded in 1906.

A fun fact about Sumter County is that it is the birthplace of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Born in Plains, a town in Sumter County, in 1924, Carter later became the 39th President of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. Today, visitors to Sumter County can explore the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which includes Carter's childhood home as well as other important sites related to his life and presidency.
