Toombs County, located in southeastern Georgia, was established on August 18, 1905, by an act of the Georgia State Legislature. With the county seat in Lyons, it was named in honor of Robert Toombs, a significant political figure who served as a U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, and later, the Secretary of State for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

Toombs County, which spans over 369 square miles, was originally inhabited by the Creek and Chickasaw tribes. The area saw exponential growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to the expansion of the railroad system. The county's economy was primarily based on agriculture, with major crops including cotton, tobacco, and timber.

Today, Toombs County is home to numerous attractions, such as the Altamaha River and the Ohoopee River, which are popular for fishing, kayaking, and other water sports. The area also boasts the Vidalia Onion Festival, an annual event held in nearby Vidalia, which celebrates the famous sweet Vidalia onions that are exclusively grown in southeastern Georgia.

Fun Fact: Toombs County takes pride in its Vidalia onions, known as the "sweetest onions in the world." These special onions were discovered accidentally in the 1930s and are known for their low sulfur content, which gives them their unique sweetness. The Vidalia Onion Festival is a four-day event that draws thousands of visitors and includes an onion-eating contest, an onion recipe contest, a carnival, live music, and many other family-friendly activities.
