Walton County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 15, 1818, and named in honor of George Walton, one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and situated approximately between Atlanta and Athens.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, Walton County's early history revolves around its function as an important crossroads for travelers due to its location near the Apalachee River. The County played a significant role in Georgia's antebellum economy as well, where cotton farming and textile mills drove local industry.

During the American Civil War, Walton County demonstrated its Confederate allegiance, with many young men from the region enlisting to fight in the Confederate Army. Following the war, Walton County experienced socioeconomic challenges but managed to recover with the rise of railroad construction, improved transportation, and the growth of various industries, including agriculture, textiles, and granite quarrying.

A fun fact about Walton County is that it is home to the "Big Poplar," one of the oldest and largest trees in the state, potentially older than the county itself. This massive poplar tree is believed to be over 200 years old and stands approximately 100 feet tall with a circumference of more than 20 feet.
