Wheeler County is located in the central-southern region of the state of Georgia, USA. Established on August 14, 1912, it was named in honor of Confederate General Joseph Wheeler, a prominent military figure during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. The county was created from parts of Montgomery County, named after Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War general.

Alamo, the county seat, was incorporated on August 18, 1890. The city is named after the famous Alamo Mission in San Antonio, Texas, which was the site of a pivotal battle during the Texas Revolution. Other cities within Wheeler County are Glenwood, founded in 1911, and the community of Lumber City, which is partially located in the county as well.

Agriculture has historically driven Wheeler County's economy, with cotton production being a significant contributor. Today, it boasts a range of agricultural products and industries, including poultry and egg production, timber, and pecan farming.

Wheeler County is also a part of the "Wiregrass Georgia" region, which gets its name from the wiregrass (Aristida stricta) plant that grows abundantly in the area. The region encompasses Southeast Georgia and parts of Florida and Alabama. The Wiregrass ecosystem has shaped the county's cultural, economic, and natural history.
