Maui County, Hawaii
.Maui County, located in the great state of Hawaii, is comprised of the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe, and the smaller, unpopulated Molokini. The county was established on July 1, 1905, when Hawaii was still a US territory, and it became a part of the state after Hawaii's statehood was granted in 1959.
Polynesians were the first to settle in Maui County around 450 AD. The islands were subsequently discovered by Europeans in 1778 when British explorer Captain James Cook arrived. The famous King Kamehameha I conquered Maui in 1795, uniting it with other Hawaiian islands under a single monarchy. The islands were later visited by whalers in the 19th century and eventually by Christian missionaries. Maui County underwent a significant economic transformation due to the sugar and pineapple industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
One fun fact about the region is that Haleakala National Park, located on Maui island, is home to Haleakala Volcano, which is one of the world's largest dormant volcanos. Standing over 10,000 feet above sea level, the summit of Haleakala offers breathtaking sunrises and attracts more than a million visitors each year.
