Adair County, located in the great state of Iowa, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1851. Named after General John Adair, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the 8th Governor of Kentucky, the county has a land area of 570 square miles and is part of the rolling plains landscape characteristic of the state. The county seat is Greenfield, which was selected in 1856 and remains its largest town today.

In its early days, Adair County was primarily a rural, agricultural area with European settlers establishing farms and small communities. The county experienced steady growth throughout the latter half of the 19th century, particularly after the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s. The railroad connected the towns of Greenfield, Fontanelle, and Adair, promoting commerce and trade within the region.

A notable event in the history of Adair County is the infamous "Jesse James Train Robbery" of 1873. Jesse James and his gang of outlaws targeted a Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad train at Adair, Iowa. This was one of the earliest train robberies in the United States and certainly stands out as a fun fact about the region.

Agriculture remains an essential part of Adair County's economy, with the area boasting a rich variety of crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. The county is also known for its investment in renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, generating a significant portion of its electricity through wind turbines.

Today, Adair County is home to several annual events celebrating its history, culture, and community, such as the Adair County Fair, the Greenfield Art Festival, and the Adair-Casey Alumni Golf Tournament. These celebrations bring the community together and promote local pride in the county's unique heritage.
