Allamakee County, located in the northeastern corner of the state of Iowa, was established on February 20, 1847, and was named in honor of a Meskwaki tribal chief by the name of Alla-Ma-Kaik. The county seat is Waukon, and it is part of the Driftless Area, a region known for its geological formations and unique terrain as a result of escaping glaciation during the last ice age.

The first settlers arrived in Allamakee County in the 1830s, with prominent settlers such as George C. Shattuck and WW Williams making their mark on the region's development. Nestled along the Mississippi River, the county is known for its abundance of fertile soil, providing excellent farmland for agriculture, which has significantly contributed to its economic growth. Forests, hills, and streams decorate the landscape, which is also heavily influenced by the Yellow River and several tributaries of the Mississippi River.

The Effigy Mounds National Monument, established in 1949, is located within Allamakee County, drawing tourists and history enthusiasts alike. This site is home to over 200 preserved prehistoric Native American mounds, including effigy mounds that are shaped like animals. These mounds were built by the Woodland Indians around 500 BC to 1200 AD and are considered sacred sites.

Fun fact: Allamakee County holds the distinction of being the county with the highest peak in the state of Iowa. The peak, Hawkeye Point, stands at an elevation of 1,670 feet (509 meters) above sea level.
