Black Hawk County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Iowa, was established on February 17, 1843. It was named after the Sauk leader Black Hawk, who was a prominent figure in the Black Hawk War of 1832. The county originally covered a larger land area, but with time, other counties were formed, giving it its present size.

The county seat of Black Hawk County is Waterloo, which was initially named Prairie Rapids Crossing but was later renamed to match the historic Waterloo Battle location in Belgium. Waterloo is the largest city in the county, closely followed by Cedar Falls, another major town in Black Hawk County.

Black Hawk County has a rich agricultural heritage, which played a significant role in shaping its economy throughout history. It is also an area with a strong educational foundation; the University of Northern Iowa, established in 1876, calls Cedar Falls home and contributes to the cultural and intellectual atmosphere of the county.

A fun fact about Black Hawk County is that, every year, it hosts the National Cattle Congress in its fairgrounds in Waterloo. This event dates back to 1910, and it is a celebration of the Midwest's agricultural heritage, featuring livestock competitions, exhibitions, and various forms of entertainment for all age groups.
