.Boone County is located in the central part of the great state of Iowa, USA. Established in 1846, the county was named after Nathan Boone, who was a seasoned military officer and hunter, and the son of the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone. The county seat, Boone, was laid out in 1865 and was originally called Boonesboro, after the pioneering family.
The historical background of Boone County is closely linked to the arrival of European settlers in the region, primarily of Swedish, Norwegian, and Irish descent. Agriculture emerged as the mainstay of the local economy, with various crops and livestock being raised throughout the county. In the latter half of the 19th century, the emergence of the railroad through the area played a significant role in its development, with the Chicago & North Western Railway Company driving economic growth and population expansion.
One interesting fun fact about Boone County is that it is home to the Kate Shelley High Bridge (also known as the Boone Viaduct), which is a double-track railroad bridge completed in 1901. When it was built, it was one of the highest and longest double-track railroad bridges in the United States, soaring 185 feet above the Des Moines River and spanning a total length of 2,685 feet. This engineering marvel significantly contributed to the development of the region and remains an iconic attraction to this day.
