Buchanan County, located in the great state of Iowa, was established on December 21, 1837. The county was named in honor of James Buchanan, who served as a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and later as the 15th President of the United States. The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Sioux, Sac, and Fox, before European settlers arrived.

The first European settlement in Buchanan County started in the early 1840s, with James Hale building the first cabin along the Wapsipinicon River. The county grew rapidly with an influx of settlers, primarily due to the fertile soil suitable for farming. The construction of railroads in the mid-19th century further contributed to the county's growth.

Agriculture has been the backbone of Buchanan County's economy since its inception. The county is known for producing a diverse range of agricultural products such as corn, soybean, livestock, and dairy commodities. Industries that support agriculture, such as manufacturing, also play a significant role in the county's economic development.

One fun fact about Buchanan County is that it's home to the Wapsipinicon State Park, which offers various recreational opportunities like hiking, fishing, and picnicking amidst the lovely landscape of limestone bluffs and forested areas along the Wapsipinicon River. The park was dedicated in 1923 and is one of Iowa's oldest and most loved state parks.
