Butler County is a picturesque region located in northeastern Iowa, within the United States. Established on January 15, 1851, the county was named in honor of General William Orlando Butler, a notable figure in the Mexican-American War and a Kentucky statesman.

The original settlers of Butler County were attracted to its fertile lands and abundant resources. The area was primarily settled by European immigrants, including Dutch, German, and Norwegian settlers. As Iowa developed its infrastructure, the Illinois Central Railroad played a significant role in connecting Butler County to the rest of the state in the early 20th century.

Agriculture has always been a vital part of the economy in Butler County, with the region being well-suited for farming with its fertile soils and ample water supply. Over the years, the county has witnessed industrial diversification, despite its rural nature.

The county seat, Allison, is named after William B. Allison, a prominent Iowan politician who contributed significantly to public affairs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
