Cass County in the great state of Iowa is steeped in history and boasts a rich heritage. Established on January 15, 1851, the county was named in honor of General Lewis Cass, a prominent American statesman who played a significant role in the political development of the United States during the 19th century. Located in southwestern Iowa, Cass County is part of the wider region known as the Midwest.

The first settlement in Cass County was established by emigrants Henry and Isaiah Kyner in 1849 near the present-day town of Lewis. The subsequent growth and development of the county were driven by agriculture and the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad to the area in the 1860s. This advent of the railroad spurred the growth of the new hamlets, such as Atlantic which later became the county seat in 1869 and led to increased population, trade, and economic prosperity.

Over the years, Cass County has sustained its agricultural base, and its residents continue to benefit from and contribute to the county's growth and development. Many of the county's towns, such as Anita, Griswold, and Massena, have thrived as important centers of commerce and industry, offering residents a blend of rural charm and modern conveniences.

One fun fact about Cass County is that it is home to the "Great Cass County Quilt Documentation Project," a local initiative that seeks to preserve and document the county's rich quilt-making heritage. This project showcases the creativity and skill of the area's quilt-makers, and also provides a unique and colorful window into the history of Cass County's vibrant communities, their resilience, and their enduring commitment to craftsmanship.
