Cerro Gordo County, located in the great state of Iowa, was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named after the Battle of Cerro Gordo, a significant victory for the United States during the Mexican-American War, which took place in April 1847. The county seat, Mason City, was founded in 1853 and is situated in the north-central part of the state.

The region was initially inhabited by the Sioux and Winnebago Native American tribes, and European-American settlement began in the early 1850s, primarily for agricultural purposes. The population of the county saw rapid growth with the arrival of a railway connection in the late 19th century, propelling the area towards further development.

One fun fact about Cerro Gordo County is that it was home to Meredith Willson, a famous American composer, songwriter, and playwright. He was born in Mason City and wrote the immensely popular Broadway musical "The Music Man," which premiered in 1957. The musical, set in a fictional Iowan town, was inspired by Mason City, and today, the city hosts the annual Meredith Willson Music Man Square Festival to celebrate his life and work.
