Clarke County is located in the southern part of Iowa, in the United States. It was established on January 13, 1846, and named after territorial legislator James Clarke. The county seat is Osceola, which was founded in 1851. Covering an area of approximately 432 square miles, Clarke County has a proud agricultural and railroading history that dates back to the 19th century.

Early European settlers, primarily from the eastern states, arrived in Clarke County in the 1840s. They were attracted to the fertile land and vast opportunities for farming, as well as access to the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, which stretches across five states, also passes through Clarke County, commemorating the journey of the Mormon pioneers to Utah in the mid-1800s.

In the 1860s, the railroad arrived in Clarke County, connecting Osceola to the Mississippi River, Des Moines, and eventually the rest of the country. This helped to accelerate growth, making Osceola and Clarke County a hub for commerce, agriculture, and trade.

One fun fact about Clarke County is the "Road to Oz," which is, in fact, a real yellow brick road in Osceola, dedicated in 2000 to honor one of its famous native sons, L. Frank Baum. Baum, the author of "The Wizard of Oz," lived and worked as a store clerk in the town while attending school in the late 1800s. The road, which stretches one city block, is decorated with 10,000 bricks, each with donor names etched on them, celebrating the town's connection to Baum's life and the enduring legacy of his novel.
