Dickinson County is located in the northwest region of the great state of Iowa, and is named in honor of Daniel S. Dickinson, a prominent lawyer and U.S. Senator from New York. It was originally formed on January 15, 1851, but it wasn't until March 10, 1857, that the county was officially organized. The county seat is at Spirit Lake, which is also the county's largest city.

Dickinson County is home to the Iowa Great Lakes, a group of natural glacial lakes that have a significant impact on the local economy and tourism. The lakes include Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake, all of which are popular destinations for boating, fishing, and various recreational activities.

A fun fact about Dickinson County is that it has a unique claim to fame known as the "clay capital of the world." This title is attributed to the region's ample supply of blue clay, a resource used for various industrial purposes, including pottery and brickmaking. Additionally, the region's rich geological history lends itself to numerous fossil discoveries, offering a plethora of opportunities for amateur paleontologists to explore the area's ancient past.
