Floyd County is located in the northeastern portion of the great state of Iowa. Established on January 15, 1851, it was named in honor of Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to die during their two-year-long journey of exploration. The county consists of 501 square miles and its county seat is Charles City, which was named after Charles Floyd.

Although the county was established in 1851, it wasn't until 1854 that the first permanent settlers, Joseph Kelly and family, arrived. It quickly grew as settlers were attracted by fertile lands and the Cedar River's water power. Charles City, the county seat, became a hub for manufacturing and commerce, with its growth boosted by the arrival of the railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Agriculture has always been predominant in Floyd County, with early settlers focusing primarily on wheat production, later transitioning to corn and livestock. Today, the county's economy is still rooted in agriculture and serves as a thriving center for agribusiness.

One fun fact about Floyd County is that Charles City, in the heart of the county, became the birthplace of the gasoline-powered tractor in 1892. It was invented by John Froelich, one of the founders of the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company, which later became the famous John Deere Tractor Company. This invention revolutionized agriculture, setting the stage for modern farming practices that we know today.
