Greene County is located in the great state of Iowa, USA. It was established on January 15, 1851, and named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a major general during the American Revolutionary War who played a key role in the Patriot victory at the Battle of Rhode Island.

The county seat, Jefferson, was chosen in 1854, named after the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Greene County has a rich history in agriculture, and its fertile lands contributed significantly to the growth and development of the region. The railroad arrived in the county in the 1860s, which helped boost the local economy by connecting farmers to distant markets.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county experienced impressive transformations, with rural roads and transportation gradually improving. This brought about more social interaction among communities and contributed to the development of the famous Greene County courthouse, which was completed in 1917.

In recent years, Greene County has continued to be a hub for agriculture, but it has also seen a rise in renewable energy projects. The county is home to wind farms, helping to generate environmentally-friendly energy for the region.

Fun fact: Greene County hosts the Bell Tower Festival every year in June. The festival, which was first held in 1977, is a celebration of the community and features a variety of events, including live music, arts and crafts vendors, games, a parade, and guided tours of the historic Mahanay Bell Tower, which was constructed in 1966. This 168-foot tall tower, boasting 14 bells, dominates the skyline of Jefferson, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
