Hancock County is located in the north-central part of the great state of Iowa. Established in 1851, it covers an area of 573 square miles and was named in honor of John Hancock, a prominent figure of the American Revolution and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Garner.

Hancock County traces its early history to the Meskwaki and Sioux tribes who called this land their home long before European settlers arrived. The first white settlers, John and Frances Palm and Olphen Johnson, arrived in 1854, followed by an influx of immigrants, mainly from Scandinavian, German, and Irish backgrounds.

The county's economic growth was spurred by the development of the railroad, which reached the area in 1869. The agricultural industry was another essential component of Hancock County's thriving economy, with fertile soil supporting the cultivation of crops like corn, wheat, and oats. Livestock management also played a pivotal role in the county's success.

Despite being predominantly rural, Hancock County has fostered a strong sense of community with a focus on education, art, and cultural programs. Community members have established several public libraries, museums, and historical sites. Of special interest is the Britt Hobo Museum and the National Hobo Convention, held annually since 1900 in the city of Britt.
