Humboldt County is located in the north-central region of the great state of Iowa. The county was established on January 15, 1851, and was named in honor of Alexander von Humboldt, a prominent German naturalist and explorer. Humboldt County was originally a part of what was known as Bancroft County, which was later divided into Kossuth and Humboldt counties following a population growth that called for a redistribution of land. The first permanent settlement in the county, however, was not until 1854, and in 1857, the city of Dakota City was designated as the county seat.

The region initially attracted settlers looking for fertile farmland and timber resources. During the late 19th and the early 20th century, the county's development was greatly influenced by the expansion of the railroad. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad made its way to the county in 1869, which further supported the growth of its economy and facilitated the transportation of agricultural goods.

Humboldt County is known for its picturesque landscapes and fertile soil, making it a thriving agricultural region. The county's economy has been predominantly based on farming and livestock production, with corn, soybeans, and dairy farming being essential industries.

A fun fact about Humboldt County is that it houses the Frank A. Gotch State Park, which is named after Frank Alvin Gotch, a world champion wrestler from Humboldt, Iowa. Born in 1878, Gotch gained fame as one of the most well-known American professional wrestlers of his time and held the World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship title from 1908 to 1913. The park, established in 1954, serves as a testament to his legacy and contribution to the world of professional wrestling.
