Johnson County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Iowa. Established on December 21, 1837, it was named in honor of Richard Mentor Johnson, the ninth vice president of the United States. The county has a rich history, encompassing several historical events and developments. Iowa City, the county seat, served as the capital of the Iowa Territory between 1838 and 1841, and later as the capital of the State of Iowa until 1857.

The Old Capitol Building, situated in the heart of downtown Iowa City, was the site of the initial drafting of the Iowa Constitution in 1846. The building is now a National Historic Landmark and serves as a museum. The University of Iowa, established in 1847, also calls Iowa City home, and annually draws thousands of students from across the country and around the world.

Johnson County played a significant role in the Underground Railroad during the 19th century, aiding fugitives who escaped from slavery. Some residents, known as "conductors," helped an estimated 1,000 fugitive slaves to find freedom.

A fun fact about Johnson County is that, in 2004, it was the first county in Iowa to legalize same-sex marriage when a local judge ruled that denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples was a violation of the Iowa Constitution. This ruling, however, was quickly stayed, and it wasn't until 2009 that the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage statewide.
