Lyon County is located in the northwest corner of the great state of Iowa. Established on January 15, 1851, it was named in honor of General Nathaniel Lyon, who had a significant role in the US Civil War. Due to its rich agricultural background, Lyon County has progressed over the years, from a largely undeveloped area to a region flourishing with agricultural activities and thriving communities.

The first European settlers arrived in the area in the mid-19th century, mainly through the Homestead Act of 1862, which allowed settlers to claim land for agricultural purposes. Throughout the years, the population of Lyon County has grown and evolved, with several small towns arising as centers of commerce, industry, and social activities.

The county seat is located in Rock Rapids, a town founded in 1862 by pioneers Holly B. and Joseph Kitchen, along with their family. The economy of Lyon County has always been firmly rooted in agriculture, and it remains an essential component of the region's identity.

A fun fact about Lyon County is that it is home to the unique Blood Run site, which is a National Historic Landmark. Blood Run is a prehistoric Native American archaeological site dating back more than 1,000 years. It was home to numerous indigenous tribes, such as the Oneota culture, and contains remnants of mounds, villages, and other artifacts, reflecting the rich history of the region's earliest inhabitants.
