Madison County is located in the great state of Iowa and is best known for its rich history and the famous covered bridges that dot the scenic landscape. It was established in January 13, 1846, and named after James Madison, the 4th President of the United States who played a key role in drafting and promoting the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

One of the early settlements in Madison County was Winterset, which was officially established in 1849 and later became the county seat. Throughout the 19th century, the region's economy grew due to agriculture, primarily focusing on crops like corn and wheat, as well as livestock production.

The county is famously known for its six remaining covered bridges; originally, there were nineteen covered bridges built in the 19th century, but now only six are preserved. These iconic structures have become synonymous with Madison County and are a popular tourist attraction. They were featured in the 1992 novel "The Bridges of Madison County" by Robert James Waller, which was later adapted into a hit movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, as well as a Broadway musical.

A fun fact about Madison County is that it's the birthplace of the legendary actor, John Wayne. He was born as Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset on May 26, 1907. Today, visitors can tour the John Wayne Birthplace Museum located in the town to learn more about his life and career.

Madison County offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its charming covered bridges, fascinating history, and connection to American icons like John Wayne.
