Monona County is located in the great state of Iowa, in the United States. The county was established on January 15, 1851, and was named after the Native American word for "beautiful waters," which is believed to be a reference to the region's rivers and natural waterways. Its county seat is Onawa, which is also the largest city in the county.

Before the arrival of European settlers, Monona County was inhabited by several Native American tribes, such as the Omaha, the Ioway, and the Dakota Sioux. In the early 19th century, the United States government signed treaties with these tribes, which led to the opening of the area for settlement in the 1840s.

The first permanent settlements in Monona County began along the Little Sioux River in the early 1850s. The growth of the county was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, which brought about increased commerce, agriculture, and trade. Monona County was primarily an agricultural region, with fertile soil and abundant natural resources that allowed farmers to grow corn, livestock, and hay, among other crops.

Throughout its history, Monona County has experienced a fluctuation in population, mainly due to the rise and fall of the agricultural industry. The county's location along the Missouri River has also had an impact on its history, with floods and other natural disasters affecting the region over the years.

One fun fact about Monona County is that in Onawa, the Eskimo Pie, a popular ice cream treat, was created by Chris Rutt, an ice cream parlor owner, and his business partner, Christian Kent Nelson, in 1920. The invention of the chocolate-coated ice cream bar was a significant innovation in the early history of commercially available ice cream products in the United States.
