Plymouth County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Iowa. It was established on January 15, 1851, and named after Plymouth, Massachusetts, which was the landing point of the Pilgrims in 1620. The county's original boundaries were defined in 1853, but it wasn't formally organized until 1858. It comprises a total area of 864 square miles.

The city of Le Mars, which serves as the county seat, was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1875. The city's name was derived from the first initials of the original six directors of the Illinois Central Railroad (Le Mars is a contraction of "L," "E," "M," "A," "R," and "S").

In its early years, Plymouth County experienced significant growth, particularly in the 1870s and 1880s, as new settlers were attracted by the fertile land and the expansion of the railway. Agriculture became the primary industry, focusing on corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs. The expansion of the railway also opened new opportunities for trade and commerce.

A fun fact about this region is that Le Mars is known as the "Ice Cream Capital of the World." This title was bestowed due to the fact that more ice cream is produced in Le Mars by Wells Enterprises, maker of Blue Bunny ice cream, than in any other city across the globe. The city celebrates this unique distinction by hosting an annual Ice Cream Days festival in June, which includes various events such as parades, ice cream socials, art exhibits, and live music.
