The name Poweshiek comes from an influential Native American chief of the Fox tribe, whose name means "To dash the water off." Poweshiek and two other chiefs signed the Treaty of 1838 that ceded much of the land that is now known as Iowa.

Poweshiek County is home to several quaint towns, the largest of which is Grinnell, known for its higher educational institution, Grinnell College, which was founded in 1846. Other towns include Montezuma, Brooklyn, Malcolm, and Deep River.

Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of Poweshiek County, with major crops including corn, soybeans, and hay. Additionally, it's a key area for livestock farming, such as cattle and hogs.

One fun fact about Poweshiek County is that it is home to the "Little Brown Church in the Vale," located in Brooklyn. Today, the church draws thousands of visitors each year from across the nation and remains an active non-denominational congregation.
