Shelby County, located in the great state of Iowa, was officially established on January 15, 1851. It spans across approximately 591 square miles in the western part of the state and is named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War General and the first governor of Kentucky. The county seat, Harlan, was founded in 1858 and named after James Harlan, another important figure in American history, who served as a U.S. Senator, Attorney General, and Secretary of the Interior.

The region was primarily settled by pioneers from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and European countries such as Denmark and Germany. They were attracted to the fertile soil in the area, which was ideal for agriculture. As a result, farming became the primary industry in Shelby County, with corn, soybeans, and livestock being the main agricultural products.

The construction of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (C&NW) in 1862 brought significant growth and development to Shelby County, connecting small towns like Irwin, Defiance, Earling, and Panama with the rest of the state. The rail line facilitated the expansion of trade and transportation in the area, further stimulating the economy.

Shelby County has a rich artistic and cultural background, which is exemplified by the creation of the "Shelby Carousel." Constructed in 1910, it initially operated in Spencer, Iowa, before being relocated to Harlan. The Shelby Carousel is an antique wooden merry-go-round and is the longest-existing privately-owned carousel in the United States. This wooden carousel was intricately hand-carved by Charles W. Dare, a notable carousel builder, making it an iconic piece of Americana and a source of pride for the community.

Fun fact: Shelby County is known for its unique life-sized bronze sculptures of famous historical figures, which can be found scattered throughout the community of Harlan. This series of high-quality statues, known as the "Harlan Collection," is created by various artists to honor prominent individuals from history, such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
