Union County is located in the great state of Iowa and was established on January 15, 1851. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, spanning 426 square miles. The county seat is Creston. The county was named after the Union, which was supportive of the United States in its attempts to halt the spread of slavery during the era of its founding.

In the early years, the economy of Union County was mainly fueled by agriculture, with settlers engaging in crop and livestock farming. The arrival of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in the 1860s significantly contributed to the growth and development of the region. It expanded business, commerce, and industry by providing easier and faster transportation for goods and people.

Union County has several interesting spots and events related to its history. One fun fact is the presence of the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, which started as the A.Y. McDonald and Co. Hospital in 1914. What makes this unique is that it was initially housed inside a retrofitted railway boxcar due to a lack of proper facilities to accommodate patients during a typhoid outbreak. The initiative to help the community during that time is a testament to the resilient and resourceful nature of the people in Union County.

Over the years, Union County has grown into a vibrant community with a mix of agriculture, industry, and recreational opportunities, preserving its historical heritage while embracing modern advancements.
