Van Buren County, located in the southeastern part of Iowa, was established on December 7, 1836, and named after the eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren. The county was among the first five counties to be established in the Iowa Territory. In its early years, the county served as a significant center for commerce due to the presence of the Des Moines River, which played a vital role in the region's transportation and economic development.

The county seat, Keosauqua, was founded in 1839, and it boasts numerous historical sites, including the 1847 Bonaparte Pottery Factory, the 1842 Pearson House, and the 1839 Hotel Manning. Villages such as Bentonsport and Bonaparte served as major transportation points during the mid-19th century, especially for steamboats. The county has many historical structures and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, indicating the rich heritage of the area.

One fun fact about Van Buren County is that it is home to the oldest courthouse in Iowa, located in Keosauqua. The Van Buren County Courthouse was built in 1843 and continues to serve the county's legal needs to this day.
