Wapello County, located in the great state of Iowa, was established on February 17, 1843. It was named in honor of Chief Wapello, a Native American chief of the Meskwaki tribe who played an essential role in maintaining peace between natives and settlers. The county is part of the larger historical region known as the "Blackhawk Purchase," which was acquired by the United States through a treaty with the Native American tribes of Sauk and Meskwaki in 1832.

The county seat is Ottumwa, a town that was founded in 1843 on the banks of the Des Moines River, which played an essential role in the growth and development of the region. The town served as a hub for trade, transportation, and industry in its early years, facilitated by the river.

As rural Iowa developed, agriculture became the backbone of this county's economy, with corn and soybeans being the primary crops. Industry and manufacturing also played a significant role in Wapello County's growth, particularly the coal-mining industry which thrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A fun fact about Wapello County is that it's the birthplace of Tom Arnold, an American actor and comedian best known for his work in TV shows such as "Roseanne" and "The Tom Show," as well as hosting the "Best Damn Sports Show Period". Arnold was born in Ottumwa in 1959, showing that Wapello County has had its share in contributing to American popular culture.
