Located in the great state of Iowa, Warren County has a rich history that dates back to its establishment on January 13, 1846. It was named in honor of General Joseph Warren, an American physician and patriot who played a key role in the American Revolution. Covering an area of approximately 570 square miles, Warren County lies just south of the state capital, Des Moines.

Warren County was initially occupied by Native American tribes such as the Ioway, Sauk, and Meskwaki, before being settled by European-Americans in the early 19th century. The first settlers arrived around Indianola, which would eventually become the county seat. Over time, the area became an important agricultural hub, thanks to its fertile land and favorable climate. In the 19th century, Swedish immigrants also made an important contribution to the county, founding the community of New Sweden.

The county saw significant growth throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks in part to the construction of railroads that provided it with better connections to Des Moines and other parts of Iowa. Residents of the county were principally engaged in activities such as farming and livestock rearing, but some industries, like coal mining, also thrived in the county.

Today, Warren County continues to value its agricultural roots while embracing modern developments. It offers residents and visitors a mix of rural charm and urban convenience, with a strong sense of community and an abundance of recreational opportunities.

Fun fact: The National Balloon Museum, located in Indianola, is dedicated to showcasing and preserving the rich history of ballooning and competitive hot air ballooning in the United States. Each year, Indianola also hosts the National Balloon Classic, a nine-day hot air balloon festival that attracts balloonists and visitors from all over the country.
