Winneshiek County, located in the northeastern region of the state of Iowa, was officially founded in 1847. The county was named after a chief of the Winnebago Native American tribe, who played a crucial role in aiding early American settlers.

The region was originally inhabited by Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), Dakota (Sioux), and Meskwaki (Fox) tribes, who lived along the watercourses in the area. European settlers began arriving in the 1830s and 1840s due to land treaties that displaced the Native American tribes. The influx of settlers led to agricultural growth and development.

Norwegian immigrants played a significant role in shaping Winneshiek County's history. Decorah, the county seat, became a hub for Norwegian-American culture and heritage. Today, the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah stands as the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single immigrant group, housing over 24,000 artifacts representing the pioneer experience of Norwegian-Americans in the region. This museum is also home to the world's most extensive collection of Norwegian-American art.

A fun fact about Winneshiek County is that it is home to the Seed Savers Exchange, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and exchanging heirloom seeds. Established in 1975, the Seed Savers Exchange aims to conserve diverse food crops by sharing seeds between their members, ultimately promoting biodiversity and sustaining agricultural heritage.
