Bear Lake County, located in the southeastern part of Idaho, was established on January 5, 1875, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. The county gets its name from the large freshwater Bear Lake, which spans the Idaho-Utah border. It is lovingly referred to as the "Caribbean of the Rockies" due to its unique turquoise-blue water, a result of suspended limestone deposits in the lake.

Bear Lake Valley has a rich history, with various Indigenous peoples having lived in the area for thousands of years. In 1819, American explorer Donald Mackenzie encountered the region and the lake. Later, European settlers, including fur traders, ranchers, and Mormon settlers led by Charles C. Rich, arrived in the mid-1800s, contributing to the establishment of multiple settlements throughout the county.

One fun fact about Bear Lake County is its association with the legendary Bear Lake Monster. Local folklore has it that a large serpent-like creature inhabits the waters of Bear Lake. This mythical creature was first reported in 1868 in a Deseret News article, and ever since, the stories have continued to intrigue locals and visitors alike. The tale of the Bear Lake Monster has become a popular aspect of the county's culture, and some attribute its origin to the creative storytelling of the early settlers to keep their children safe from the deep waters of the lake.
