Benewah County is located in the Panhandle region of Idaho, a state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The county was established on January 23, 1915, and was named after a chief of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Chief Benewah. The county covers a total area of 784 square miles and is bordered by Kootenai County to the north, Latah County to the west, and Nez Perce County to the south. As of 2020, the estimated population is 9,370, with its administrative center located in the city of St. Maries.

Prior to the arrival of the settlers, Benewah County was inhabited by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, who had strong connections to the land and water. European-Americans first settled in this area during the early 19th century, mainly comprising fur trappers and missionaries. The discovery of gold in the 1860s, along with the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in the 1880s, led to an influx of settlers and farmers in the region.

A significant part of Benewah County's history is linked to timber, industries, and agriculture. The county became a leading producer of timber during the late 20th century. Presently, the county's economy is driven by agriculture, forestry, and recreational activities such as camping, hunting, and fishing, as well as year-round festivals.
