Cassia County is located in the southern region of the great state of Idaho. It was established on February 20, 1879, and named after Cassia Creek, which in turn borrowed its name from a species of cinnamon that grew in the area (Cercocarpus ledifolius, also known as Mountain Mahogany).

The area was originally inhabited by the Shoshone and Bannock Native American tribes. European settlers, mainly from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), arrived in the mid-19th century as part of the westward expansion movement. The burgeoning agricultural community focused on farming and livestock, eventually supported by the arrival of key railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The beautiful and diverse landscape of Cassia County includes natural attractions such as the City of Rocks National Reserve, known for its unique granite rock formations that served as a landmark for pioneers along the California Trail during the Gold Rush. Today, it is a popular rock climbing destination.

Fun Fact: Cassia County is home to the world's first commercial cave-aged cheese facility, Ballard Cheese, where cheese is aged in the ideal environments of local lava caves.
