Jefferson County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Idaho, established on February 18, 1913. The county was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, who played a significant role in the country's development.

Before the establishment of Jefferson County, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Shoshone and Bannock. Euro-American settlers, mainly fur trappers and traders, arrived in the early 19th century. In the following decades, more and more settlers, including farmers and cattle ranchers, migrated to the region.

The construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad in the 1880s accelerated growth in the area, resulting in the development of towns such as Rigby, Lewisville, and Menan. Agriculture and livestock industries drove the local economy. Also, the establishment of the Idaho Experimental Farm in 1905 helped to revolutionize dry farming techniques and improve irrigation systems, further shaping the county's agricultural landscape.

A fun fact about Jefferson County is that it is often considered the birthplace of television. Rigby's own Philo T. Farnsworth, an American inventor and television pioneer, conceived the basic concepts of electronic television while still a teenager at the local high school. A museum dedicated to Farnsworth can be found in Rigby, celebrating his remarkable achievements and the region's unique contribution to the world of technology.
