Lemhi County is located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Idaho. This county was established on January 9, 1869, and spans approximately 4,570 square miles. The county seat is located in Salmon, which is also the largest city in the region. Lemhi County is named after Fort Lemhi, a settlement founded in 1855 by Mormon missionaries. Fort Lemhi, in turn, took its name from a character mentioned in the Book of Mormon, and a nearby river also shares the name.

The history of Lemhi County is closely linked to the indigenous peoples who lived in the region for thousands of years before European contact. The Lemhi Shoshone tribe, most notably, played a significant role in the area's past. Sacajawea, the famous Native American guide and interpreter for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was a member of the Lemhi Shoshone tribe. The area also saw significant migration during the California Gold Rush in the 19th century, as prospectors and pioneers traveled through the region.

One fun fact about Lemhi County is that it was part of the route taken by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in their quest to explore and map the western portion of the United States, which played a crucial role in the nation's westward expansion. In August 1805, the Lemhi Pass, a high mountain pass located on the present-day border of Montana and Idaho, was crossed by the expedition, recognizing it as the first crossing of the Continental Divide by European Americans.
