Lewis County is located in the great state of Idaho and is named after the famous explorer, Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was established on March 3, 1911, and has a rich history that dates back thousands of years with the original inhabitants being the Nez Perce Tribe.

In the early 19th century, the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area that would eventually become Lewis County. They were in search of a navigable water route to the Pacific Ocean, and their journey through the region offered glimpses of the untamed wilderness that awaited future settlers.

In the latter half of the 1800s, European settlers began to make their way to the region. The early economy centered around farming, ranching, and logging, and the establishment of communities in the area led to the creation of the new county in 1911. The county seat is Nezperce, which is also named in honor of the Native American tribe.

One fun fact about Lewis County is that it is home to the Camas Prairie, a unique prairie-forest ecosystem known for its abundant wildflowers, particularly the blue camas flower. Every spring, the area hosts the annual Camas Festival, which celebrates the natural beauty and history connected to this plant. Camas bulbs played a significant role in the diets of Native American tribes, including the Nez Perce, who harvested and prepared them as an essential food source.
