Lincoln County is located in the southern part of Idaho, named after the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The county was established on March 18, 1895, by the Idaho State Legislature, and it was initially carved out of the counties of Logan and Alturas. Its county seat and largest city is Shoshone.

Lincoln County played an essential role in the mining and sheep farming industries in the early days of Idaho's history. In the late 19th century, several blossoming mining communities emerged in the area, including the towns of Muldoon, Smokey, Vienna, and Broadford.
