Owyhee County, located in the southwestern region of Idaho, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. Prior to the arrival of European explorers, the area was inhabited by the Shoshone and Northern Paiute tribes. The origin of the county's name, "Owyhee," comes from a corruption of the word "Hawaii" it refers to three Hawaiian trappers who worked with British explorer Donald Mackenzie's fur-trapping expedition in 1819 but mysteriously disappeared in what is now the Owyhee River.

In 1863, following the discovery of gold and silver deposits in the region, Owyhee County was officially established by the Idaho Legislature, making it one of the four original Idaho counties. The mining boom led to a rapid increase in population as miners, merchants, and settlers flocked to the area. The town of Silver City became a thriving mining community during this time, boasting numerous hotels, stores, and even an opera house.

Owyhee County's economy eventually shifted toward ranching and agriculture as the mining industry waned. The area now depends heavily on cattle and hay farming, along with some dairy farming and crop production.

Fun Fact: Owyhee County is the second-largest county in Idaho, covering an expansive land area of 7,697 square miles. With a population density of just over 1 person per square mile, it's one of the most sparsely populated regions in the state, allowing for a vast range of outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and rafting.
