Alexander County is located in the southernmost part of Illinois and was established on March 4, 1819, from portions of Union County. It was named in honor of William M. Alexander, an early settler in the region and a prominent figure in the creation of the state of Illinois. The county seat is Cairo, which was founded in 1837 at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Alexander County has a rich historical background, as its strategic location made it an important center for transportation and commerce in the mid-1800s, particularly during the Civil War. It served as a base for Union troops and was on the route of the Underground Railroad due to its proximity to the free state of Missouri across the Mississippi River.

The county experienced rapid growth and economic prosperity through the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the areas of steamboat and railroad transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing industries. However, disasters, such as flooding in the early 20th century, and economic decline in the later part of the 20th century, resulted in a significant population decrease and challenges for the area.

One fun fact about Alexander County is that Fort Defiance, now known as Fort Defiance Park, was built in 1862 by Union General Ulysses S. Grant as a training base and river blockade during the Civil War. The park now offers a picturesque view of the confluence of the two mighty rivers, the Ohio and the Mississippi, attracting visitors from around the region.
